Universal Supports and Strategies

Universal supports are those strategies and programs that are delivered by the teacher typically to benefit the entire class.  Universal supports are teacher driven but may

  • use resources (strategies and programs) provided by the rehabilitation therapists,
  • be supported by consultation from rehabilitation therapists,
  • grow out of professional development activities offered by the rehabilitation therapists.

  1. Note: Universal SLP and OT strategies can be used in a variety of ways to meet learning needs.

3.  Therapists can support teachers by:

  • providing PD upon request
    • a quick hallway chat
    • a 10 minute “coffee talk” over recess
    • more formally in ½ hour or 1 hour presentations
  • modelling a small segment of a universal strategy that may be unclear
  • providing handouts on a wide variety of topics.

4.  Please see the strategies/supports listed in the “Targeted” section:   Examples of Targeted Programs as many of those can be used as Universal strategies/supports as well.
