Complex Communication and Mobility Consultants (CCMC)

Complex Communication and Mobility Services provide support for children and youth who are experiencing significant functional challenges participating in their educational program.

CCMC services may include:

  • Speech Language Pathology Consultation
  • Occupational Therapy Consultation
  • Physical Therapy Consultation

The CCM Consultants may become involved if there is a significant functional impact requiring additional support beyond what has already been provided. Factors to consider may include:

  • Functional Impact of Diagnosis
    • Note: A diagnosis does not automatically mean that a student requires service from CCM Consultants. The severity of the functional impact is the determining factor. For example, a student with Autism may have functional verbal skills, and therefore not require the services of a CCM Consultant.
  • Return to school following surgery/illness
    • Example – Student had surgery after a serious injury and school staff require support for managing transfers.
  • Require a team approach with multiple service providers
    • Example – Student has vision and accessibility needs impacting the use of their communication device, requiring support from the Consultant for the Blind and Visually Impaired (BVI), OT and SLP.
  • Complex communication needs, including high tech or low tech options
    • Example – Student with Autism who has very little verbal communication and significantly delayed fine motor skills receives assessment for communication device with mounting hardware.
  • Severe mobility needs
    • Example – School staff require support to assist student in safely managing stairs and hallways.
  • Require consultation to support participation in activities of daily living
    • Example – Student has complex toileting needs that may require equipment.
  • Equipment needs
    • Example – Student with Cerebral Palsy who may need a walker, wheelchair, commode or mechanical lift.

Please note that CCM consultants assist with recommending, assessing, trialing, applying for and using equipment. They do not provide funding for equipment.
